Snowmass, CO Jan 2025 (IKON)

Our ever-popular Snowmass trip returns to the ski-in/ski-out Timberline Condos, literally steps from the slopes and a 5 minute walk to restaurants and shops. Aspen/Snowmass has something for everyone - there's a reason why it is our most popular trip every year! This year we have a different trip leader, but the same nightly aprés ski and on-mountain meetups.

Vail, CO Jan 2025 (EPIC)

Vail Ski Resort is world-renowned for providing guests with an experience that truly is “Like nothing on Earth.” Founded in 1962, the Colorado resort is home to seven legendary back bowls spanning seven miles across the backside of the resort. The ski area is enormous with over 5,289 acres to explore and four distinct base areas connected by free buses and heated walkways. It draws skiers from all over the world and provides excellent terrain for all ability levels. We'll stay at the Vail Spa condos, a short walk from the Eagle Bahn Gondola

Park City, UT Feb 2025 (EPIC)

Park City Mountain, the largest ski resort in the United States, is located in the heart of Park City, Utah, only a 35-minute drive from Salt Lake City International Airport and steps from historic Main Street in charming Park City. 2022 Ski Trips

Yes, our 2022 ski trips are now on our website and available for signup. We're excited to be offering 3 trips for 2022. As always, Tony's fabulous Snowmass trip is one of them and set for January 22-29. We are also offering a Florida Ski Council trip to Lake Tahoe, January 22-29. The February trip will be to Taos, February 19-26. All our trips will include pre-trip parties and club dinners on the trip.

SNOWMASS, January 22-29

Tony Magna will again be leading the Snowmass trip and lodging will again be at the Crestwood Condos. This is always a popular trip and most who go on this trip do so every year. Click here for more details.

LAKE TAHOE, January 22-29

Christina Griffith, who always leads a fun trip, will be leading the Lake Tahoe trip. We will be staying at Harvey's Hotel and Casino which is walking distance to the lifts at Heavenly. This mountain has amazing views of the lake and all levels of terrain. There will be lots of extras on this trip, including FSC activities. Click here for more details.

TAOS, NEW MEXICO, February 19-26

Our third trip is to Taos, New Mexico, and will be led by Don Chalaire, who has led many great ski trips. We will be staying at Edelweiss Lodge and Spa, a ski-in, ski-out luxury hotel within walking distance to shopping and restaurants. Click here for more details.

Summer heat is truly upon us and many of you have escaped to northern climes. Has it started snowing yet?

For those of us sticking it out down here, the social scene is in full swing with regular monthly meet-ups in Boca and beyond. Our social director, Debbie Boardman, has organized some great events, so whether you are a member or just want to learn more about the club, why not come along? Click here for more info.

The Holland Tulip trip and the early Snowmass trip are both sold out and our other trips are filling up quickly. A big thanks to all our trip leaders - Debbie Boardman, Christina Griffith, Tony Magna and David Sacks. If you couldn't make the February Snowmass trip, remember we have another Snowmass in March along with Crested Butte in January and Park City in February. If you haven't signed up yet don't miss out!

And make a note in your diaries for the Peter Glenn Ft. Lauderdale Ski & Snowboard Show - October 5-7. Pick up some new gear, and say hi to the Boca Ski Club team who will have a booth there.

Meet on the beach at 9 am and enjoy a snorkeling adventure on the artificial reef just offshore. There are tons of beautiful fish just below the surface!

Bring dive flags, too, if you have them, and we can share.

Parking is only $3 an hour at this park, but the lot fills up by about 10 am.

Ski Legs

Hello Boca Skiers! It’s the time of year to start thinking about getting back into skiing shape. Now is a great time to start an exercise regimen that builds slowly and steadily avoiding training injuries. This will allow you to stay on the slopes all day long. Living in South Florida, at sea level, is a disadvantage as we travel to the mountains without much time to acclimate. So with a little prep and some common sense rules, we can all be ready to Ski and stay healthy!

Always consult your private medical doctor prior to beginning any exercise or nutrition regimen.

There are many ways to get used to the altitude so you can enjoy your skiing getaway. Here are some tips to get acclimated so you can focus on having fun!!

Oxygen

A quick way to adapt to the elevation is to carry a portable oxygen canister. Simply take a shot or two whenever you feel winded. Oxygen concentrators can be purchased or rented at most ski resorts. Also, the medical stations will have oxygen on-site for sick skiers.

Take it Easy

It’s understandable that you’re eager to hit the slopes, but take it slowly. Over-exertion will make it harder to adjust to the elevation. Try a low-impact activity on your first day such as snowmobiling. Many ski resorts offer alternatives to skiing and snowboarding; so you can still enjoy yourself while getting acclimated to the altitude. If you are flying into Denver, consider flying in a day early and staying in Denver for one night . Denver’s elevation is 5000ft. Sleeping overnight in Denver will help you to acclimate to 5000ft before you make the ascent to 9000ft. This two-step altitude adjustment gives your body more time to adjust.

Stay Hydrated

Drink plenty of liquids. High elevations can cause fluid loss, so it’s important to stay well hydrated. Stick with water or liquids that replace electrolytes. Avoid alcoholic, sugary and caffeinated beverages as these liquids act as diuretics and can dehydrate you. Drink lots of water! Frequent urinating from consuming so much water is much better than laying in bed with a splitting headache.

Eat Right

Stop in at Breckenridge’s world-class restaurants to recharge. A meal high in carbohydrates will improve your body’s ability to absorb oxygen, and will give you the energy needed to adjust to the elevation. Avoid salty foods – the sodium might increase your blood pressure, which can exacerbate the symptoms of altitude sickness. When we arrive in Summit County we like to eat at a place called “Noodles & Company”. They have delicious noodles that are high in carbs.

Take Your Vitamins and Medications

Always consult your physician before starting any new medication Some literature suggests that taking iron supplements can make it easier to perform aerobic activities (like skiing) at high elevations.Consult a doctor first, as iron is toxic in high doses. Taking 120 mg of Ginko Biloba in the weeks leading up to your skiing getaway, and maintaining that dosage during your trip, might also reduce the time needed to adjust to the altitude. Drugs such as Diamox (Acetazolamide) can reduce the symptoms and duration of altitude sickness. Ideally, Diamox should be taken a few days prior to your trip, but it can also be used on the spot if you start feeling ill. Keep ibuprofen or acetaminophen on hand to prevent headaches.

Descend to Sleep

Sleeping at a lower altitude makes it easier to adjust to the rarefied air of Breckenridge. You’ll feel better and have more energy after a good night’s sleep in a lodge at a lower elevation. Lodging is scattered all up and down the mountains, with some lodges being higher than 10,000 ft.

If All Else Fails

If you’ve feeling ill, descend to a lower elevation and work your way back up to the resort gradually. Sometimes the best remedy is simply time. While no one wants to lose out on a day’s fun, you’ll feel even worse if your whole trip is wrecked due to a prolonged illness.Always consult your private medical doctor prior to beginning any exercise or nutrition regimen.

President's Black Diamond Rundown:

April 2017

It has been 10 years since I first joined the Club but I can still remember 2008 when we could only fill 1 trip. Well, last year and this year we ran 5 great ski trips. The Boca Ski Club has come a long way thanks to all of you. So let’s keep the momentum going; please become more active in the development of the Club. Membership, social activities, marketing and new and exciting adventures are all areas in which we need committee assistance. It is also the time of year that we accept nominations for the Board. There will be at least 3 openings so please let me know if you would like to volunteer or would like more information.

The Board is already planning 2018 season ski trips and considering summer trips/events as well. But, it is not too late to let us know what your preferences are. Remember this is your Club - your input and participation helps us to grow the Club and make all of the trips & events as successful as possible.

Anybody who has not yet joined the Boca Ski Club on Meetup, please consider doing so. Meetup is a great social network that allows us to quickly and easily keep you up to date on all upcoming events, and you are even able to RSVP. There is a link on the website to make easy for you; it is FREE to sign up!

President's Black Diamond Rundown:

Our first two trips are completed – Snowmass and Breckenridge. By all accounts they were very successful with everyone having a wonderful time. Weather and snow conditions were excellent, and the comradery was warm and friendly. A special congratulations to Kevin Murtha for his first trip as the trip leader. And, a thank you to Tony Magna for leading the trip to Snowmass.

The trip to Banff/Lake Louise, Canada, led by Linda Howe, another new Trip Leader, is well underway. There are still two trips remaining, St. Anton, Austria with Kathi Mosier and my trip to Big Sky.

We all should be grateful that we are able to continue enjoying the things we love to do. However, we might contemplate just how long it will last. Well my friends please view the attached short video for some real inspiration...

Breckenridge:
Hello Boca Ski Club: Breckenridge 2017 is in the books!! According to the Trip Evaluations and the participants' good cheer, it was a great success. The "Group of 25" made the trip and had a great time. The conditions at Breck were fabulous; plenty of snow, food, fun and fellowship.

We had a group that took a Snowmobile excursion while others went snowshoeing. Fun for all!!

Your winter vacation is no doubt about getting out on the snow, but there are other things that make a trip memorable. For a lot of us, food plays a big part in any vacation. So, why not combine your love for the snow with the desire to eat at some fantastic restaurants? Here are some of the best ski resorts for foodies in the US:
>Park City, Utah. The state has loosened some of it's previously strict liquor laws and Utah is becoming one of the best places to try locally produced spirits.
>Jackson Hole, Wyoming. The resort area now has more restaurants than you will be able to visit in a single ski vacation.
>Stowe, Vermont. So close to Ben and Jerry's ice cream factory...
>Vail, Colorado. There is something for everyone; seafood, steaks and fine French cuisine.
>Taos, New Mexico. It's not just Southwest and Mexican anymore...

Top Four US Progression Ski Resorts:
Building basic skills is easy enough with all kinds of resorts providing lessons for beginners. However, if you want to progress quickly from stage to stage, you’ll need to choose the right resort. These resorts all offer something that will help you to push past a plateau and work towards your goals as a skier.
>Sun Valley, Idaho. There are plenty of intermediate runs to tackle across the two mountains at Sun Valley but you can do more than just improve on your skills here. This resort gives you the chance to try something new too. The Red Tail Hawk trails are a great chance for you to try your hand at trail skiing through some varied terrain. Once you’ve tried these trails, perhaps move up to the Huckleberry Bear trail that offers a little more for those of you who feel confident and want to explore.
>Heavenly, Lake Tahoe. This resort has a fantastic Ski and Ride School that makes learning to ski and snowboard a lot of fun.
>Squaw Valley, California. If you want to try something new or take on a new challenge, head on over to one of the five terrain parks.
>Killington, Vermont. For those of you who want to tackle a terrain park or two, start at the Easy Street Progression Park. The 15 small features are perfect for beginners and the fun, learning environment makes it easy to progress. Once you feel confident, perhaps head to the Timberline Park where you’ll find 20 small and medium jumps, jibs and rails.
